JANUARY NEWSLETTER 2022<
/b>
RESOLUTIONS Written by Julie L. Harper The change in our annual calendar from 2021 to 2022 brings hope to many. We celebrate with the hope that with a new year comes new and better circumstances. Desire is born out of discontentment, but change does not come without action driven by intent and dedicated focus. Resolutions are born out of a desire for greater happiness, so we make new year's resolutions. But oftentimes they are too lofty, far beyond the first steps needed that lead to a chosen outcome of greater happiness. One correct step at a time helps to keep one in the present, but still creates a path of greater satisfaction because intentional steps by goodness influence forthcoming good results. The first step in any resolution must be by a resounding choice to do better for ourselves and for others. Every caring act is a stepping stone of happiness, as the giver of upliftment to another also becomes reciprocated with joy. In moving forward, remember that it is from spiritual connection, and connections with others, that true happiness is experienced. Be resolute to these connections, not only for the sake of happiness but because they are meaningful and purposeful for good personal and social advancement. A path of good intentions is honorable, effective, and more meaningful toward happiness than any road paved with gold. EDITORIAL: A NEW YEAR Written by Yvonne Crespo Limoges As we enter our third year of dealing with COVID, so many feel overwhelmed, frustrated and depressed. Loss and serious illness, the threat of illness and dealing with various health protocols, differing from place to place, have thrown many lives off balance. Yet, we must try to live our lives as best we can, navigating our way through the daily changes, adjusting our behavior to meet the challenges. Focusing on what we have some control over in life and reflecting on all we are grateful for, can provide a more balanced perspective of our lives; we may be surprised how much good is in it. Humankind has faced adversities since the beginning, now is no different. Our increased and evolving intelligence and capacity for compassion and love, have aided us. When things are most difficult, in due course we have lifted ourselves to meet the level of our challenges, revealing an inner higher potential. Thus, we can also look at these trying times as an opportunity for personal growth and a means for further progression of our soul, which is the purpose of material life. SPIRITISM IN U.S. – BRIEF SUMMARY Written by Yvonne Crespo Limoges The Spiritist movement has come a long way in the U. S. in the last 40 plus years, from only a few isolated Spiritist groups and only a few Spiritist books in English. My father always lamented that upon finding a new book on reincarnation, Kardec or Spiritism were never mentioned. We know Spiritists (likely Hispanics immigrating from Cuba and Puerto Rico exposed to Kardec’s books from Spain) were in the U.S. at least since 1888, since groups out of Tampa, FL and from New York attended the International Spiritist Congress of 1888 in Spain (they are listed as attendees in the Congress program minutes). I have known several Spiritist groups with mostly Hispanic members in Miami and NYC (my grandfather’s center was established in 1933 in NYC and as a little girl attended twice). And, our family would drive to Miami for years to buy Spiritist books in Spanish and attend Mr. Payas’ center, and later others’ centers there. For many years now, I am grateful for my friendship with Spiritists Norberto and Maria Prieto in Miami. Also, my parents visited a group in San Antonio, Texas whose members were of Mexican descent. In my early teens, I could only read The Spirits’ Book and The Mediums’ Book in English (Anna Blackwell’s British translation). The Gospel according to Spiritism was not in English until Janet Duncan’s British translation in 1987. In the Spiritist Society of Florida (est. 1982), my father (disincarnated in 2008) translated into English two Spiritist books; one by Amalia Domingo Soler (Memoirs of Father Germain) and by Miguel Vives (A Practical Guide for the Spiritist) from Spain. I helped translate and final edited Jon Aizpurua’s Fundamentals of Spiritism (2013). All available www.amazon.com. And, I currently have a book in the works to be published. Our group’s articles have been published in Summit magazine - National Association of Spiritualist Churches, newsletter Fraternally Yours of the International Spiritualist Association, newsletter Searchlight and the Journal of the Academy of Spirituality and Paranormal Studies and in those of other parapsychology organizations. At least since the 70s, Spiritists immigrants from Brazil rapidly organized: forming centers, translating Spiritist material and many books into English, lecturing and holding conferences throughout the country, and spreading Spiritism via social media, and networking with other organizations. The U.S. Spiritist Federation was established in 1997, and via the U. S. Spiritist Council came many English translations. Out of Brazil, came a 2019 movie Kardec in English, currently streaming on NETFLIX. Among so very many, I would like to recognize the continued work of those I know, in spreading Spiritism in English: Jon Zerio, PhD and the Allan Kardec Educational Society; Jussara & Joao Korngold and the Spiritist Group of New York; Antonio Leite, Advanced Study Group of Spiritism; and, Vanessa Anseloni, PhD of Kardec Radio and editor of the U.S. Spiritist Magazine and all those who work with her. Due to exposure to Spiritist material in English, U.S. academics/intellectuals/writers involved in the paranormal field took notice. So, I was pleasantly surprised to read especially in the book, Signs of Reincarnation (2019) by James G. Matlock, PhD (a research fellow with the Parapsychology Foundation in New York) mention Kardec and discuss reincarnation from a Spiritist perspective. I’m sure my father in the spirit world is very pleased! Other books in English mention Spiritism now, too. As a teen, I searched hard for books on Spiritism in English. I am thrilled that there is plenty of them for future generations to read and study in the U.S. now. DIVINE HELP Written by José Manuel Meseguer Clemente Except for a few moments of calm, life is full of problems that are challenges for the evolving being. In little time, complications occur and delicate and embarrassing situations multiply ... Sometimes it is family setbacks, in other cases lack of health; work or economic difficulties also make an appearance, and a long list of situations existence. In this tangle of accumulated issues, one wonders: What to do? Will I be able to get out of these problems? Will I be able to fix them or at least smooth them out? …These are the great dilemmas that, at some point, appear in our existence. The way to deal with problems depends on the personality of each individual, on the degree of self-esteem that leads the human being to always trust his possibilities, his capabilities; also in the skills, experience and intelligence of him to be able to solve them. However, on many occasions, loads appear so heavy that they exceed any personal limit, that go beyond ordinary possibilities, and we often overestimate when we verify that things do not happen as we thought or had calculated. These are extreme situations that force us to have to look Above, requesting help… It is true it is not necessary to wait for life to get complicated to ask for help from “Up High.” It would be a true act of humility, of spiritual understanding and faith to keep that channel open at all times, both in joy and in sadness. However, our spiritual inferiority makes us forgetful…only when real problems appear, is when we find ourselves obligated to put ourselves in the real life that we have had to live, a world that demands sacrifices, constant changes, efforts to rectify past mistakes or overcome wrongful inclinations and, in this way, illuminate the conscience in the direction of a happier future. Divine help is inherent in each being because of the strong ties that unite us to the Creator… Problems weaken us, generate insecurities and fear, also can cause uncertainty ... It is normal, when someone feels threatened, besieged and without a hint of finding a door of escape, it is in those moments when we must appeal to trust in Divine assistance… If for a moment we could with our limited eyes, observe the greatness and immensity of the Creator, we would be overwhelmed before so much beauty, so much love flowing in the direction of all creatures. The Creator watches over you and helps you, not always in the way you want, but in the best way for your true happiness… We, in our limited vision, are practically blind and do not manage to understand the way of the sublime… we forget that the road to progress and happiness is long, of which we barely glimpse a few steps. The Creator, however, contemplates the eternal horizon and calibrates better than anyone what is best for us… (Excerpt from an article date 06/14/ 21, by the Association of Spiritual Studies Villena Group, Alicante, Spain) THE CREATOR The Omnipotent Creator is All-Love and All- Perfect, and demonstrates unconditional Love, Beneficence, and Solicitude in the Divine Laws, and, can be seen and felt, through and from, the morally superior spirits which are sent to assist, protect, inspire, and communicate with us to further our spiritual and moral progression. – Y. L. Youth Speaks… Article & Prayer by S.P. CARRY ON WITH HOPE AND LOVE Life is not always easy to go through. Trials of hardship, pain, struggle and suffering are all part of life. Yet despite those trials, there are ways to overcome them whether it be courage, inner strength, hope and/or faith. Each person has their own tribulations that they chose and must go through, and they’re all different from each other, most because of actions we’ve taken in past lives (that we don’t now remember) and their current consequences. A lot of us live with lifetimes of poverty and sickness, while others are in wealthy and/or healthy ones. It’s all part of the Law of Cause and Effect. If you feel unworthy or that you’re all alone without anyone to help you, don’t let those feelings take full control. Take a moment to stop, calm down and think about anything positive. Whatever makes you happy, can help you feel better about yourself and others. You matter! Also, think about all the positive ways that you can make things better for yourself, and any others who suffer around you. Everyone benefits when we help each other. The most powerful medicine is prayer. Praying is very beneficial for all of us, calling to our spirit friends. The powerful energies from the good spirits help us so much. For those who have loved ones returned to the spirit world, break free from the chains of grief and sorrow. No matter what happens, the ones who are closest to you will always be with you, for the love you have for them and the love they have for you never dies. You will reunite Try to carry on through life’s trials, with hope and love. PRAYER Dear God, we pray that your influence helps the struggling and suffering to be on the right track without losing sight of what’s important. Help those who seek knowledge to be able to learn what they should. We pray for forgiveness for choices that were not for the good of ourselves and/or others. May we be guided, comforted and blessed. May all the prayers of good-hearted people reach the hearts of those who struggle. And, let us remember that Love is the way. SPIRITUAL PATHWAY OF THE SOUL By Léon Denis (1846-1927) “Through the succession of times, on the surface of thousands of worlds, our existences unfold, pass and renew. In each passing, the little of the evil which is within us is eliminated, and our strengthened and purified souls are able to, advance yet a little along the sacred path, until the time, when liberated at last from the necessity of painful reincarnations, they have conquered by merits the access to the higher circles – where beauty, wisdom, power, and love, everlastingly shines.” (Excerpt from After Death, Ch. 11, p.131, 2017 English translation by Jussara Korngold & U.S. Spiritist Council) **************************************** Edited by Yvonne Crespo Limoges, Director E-mail: ylimoges@aol.com Spiritist Society of Florida (est. 1982) 5042 22 Avenue North St. Petersburg, Florida 33710 Website: www.spiritistsocietyfl.com
